What is macular degeneration (AMD)?

Macular degeneration is the loss of the center part of the retina of the eye which is called the macula.  As the macula deteriorates, vision is seen through the peripheral or outside edges of the eye.  It may occur in one eye or both eyes.  It can occur at any age though it is more often occurs as people age. Persons with macular degeneration are often classified as "legally blind" due to the extreme loss of vision.

What are the lighting problems persons with macular degeneration encounter?

Persons with macular degeneration generally prefer the light during the day for seeing.  Indoor lighting is often too glaring or bright and can be painful to the eye.  Sometimes a person has the light so close to their face in an attempt to see, the heat and the glare from the bulb become unbearable.

What are lighting guidelines for persons with macular degeneration?

• Lights should have little or no glare.
• Lights should have low heat so that the lamp projects minimal heat.
• Shades on table and floor lamps should be light so that light can project through the shade. (Check with person for personal preferences.)
• There should be no direct light in a person's eyes.  Keep the direct light level below the person's eyes. 
• If a person is doing reading or a close task, a flexible lamp fixture that can direct light makes it easier to focus on the material.
