They screw into regular sockets where incandescent bulbs with medium or candelabra screw-in bases are used. Different shapes, sizes and wattages are available!  Total Spectrum lamps are special because they provide a better environment to see work, print, color, detail, projects, hobbies, etc. They work in on-off lamps, lamps on timer switches, sconces, ceiling fans, ceiling fixtures, chandeliers, 3-way lamps etc.

Dimmable Bulbs

Our total spectrum compact fluorescent bulbs cannot be used with a dimmer switch.  The bulbs will burn out and will not be covered by warranty. .

3-Way Lamps

There is a special 3-way Total Spectrum compact fluorescent that can replace a 40-75-150 watt incandescent 3-way bulb.  The 3-way Total Spectrum bulb uses only 14-19-32 watts. This provides the ability to adjust the light level while providing enormous energy savings.  If a 3-way Total Spectrum bulb is used in an on / off lamp, the bulb will illuminate to replace a 125 watt incandescent bulb.

If an on / off or dimmable Total Spectrum bulb is used in a 3-way lamp, the bulb will illuminate on the second switch to its maximum brightness.  It will remain at its maximum brightness on the third switch.

Indoor versus Outdoor Bulb Use

Most Total Spectrum compact fluorescent bulbs are for indoor use unless stated otherwise..

Total Spectrum bulbs produce "white light" or natural daylight quality illumination.  They are energy-efficient and rated long life (2 – 6 years depending on usage) due to their compact fluorescent design.  They are different from compact fluorescents purchased in stores or given away by electric companies due to the "white light" produced.  The bulbs from stores and electric companies generally produce "yellow light" because they match the color of incandescent light.  Total Spectrum tubes produce "white light" compared to the dingy yellow of cool white or to the pinkish – orange of warm white tubes. 

Total Spectrum bulbs use less energy and produce less heat compared to incandescent and halogen bulbs. This produces a safer environment from such hazards as fires.

EXAMPLE

An 11 watt Total Spectrum bulb can be used to replace a 60 watt incandescent bulb.  The 11 watt uses less than 1 / 5 (one fifth) of the energy needed for  60 watt bulb and lasts over 10 times longer than the 60 watt bulb.  The result is significant energy and dollar savings.

• Less electricity is used which saves money
• Fewer bulbs are purchased because the Total Spectrum bulb has a longer life
• Less heat produced can mean less air – conditioning needed which results in dollar savings
• Better ability to see means fewer bulbs and less wattage is used resulting in dollar savings

Total Spectrum bulbs have electronic ballasts which virtually eliminate the irritating flickering and humming often associated with fluorescent style lights.

NOTE: A watt is a measure of electricity or energy used.  As more watts are used, more heat is produced.  A watt does not measure the amount of light produced.

Lumen Output

People have been taught to look at the lumen output of a bulb to determine how much light is being produced.  Unfortunately "lumen output" includes glare which is not usable by the eye for seeing.  Glare can cause eyes to squint which can cause eyestrain, headaches and fatigue.  Lumen output does not specifically measure the usability or see-ability quality of light by the eyes.

Selecting a Total Spectrum Bulb

Below are helpful guidelines in choosing the best Total Spectrum bulb to replace existing incandescent bulbs.

1. What watt bulb do you wish to replace?
2. Does the bulb need to be on/off, 3-way, dimmable, indoor use, or outdoor use?
3. What shape is the bulb…regular shape, globe, spotlight, flood light, flame or torpedo shape, etc.?
4. Does the bulb have a regular screw-in base or does it have a small candelabra screw-in base?
5. Are there any restrictions on the physical size of the bulb used due to the amount of space available?

What are socket extenders, harps and harp extenders?

A harp is the metal frame which attaches a shade to a lamp.  Sometimes a harp is either too short or narrow for a Total Spectrum compact fluorescent bulb.  Harp extenders raise the height and widen the base of the existing harp to accommodate the bulb. Taller harps are generally available at a local hardware, lamp or retail store if needed.

 On occasion a light bulb will not turn on because the bulb is not receiving electricity.  Socket extenders raise the height of an electrical socket so that the end of the light bulb connects to the middle of the socket.  This enables electricity to pass to the bulb.

Can you use a Total Spectrum bulb if your lamp has a large screw-in socket or mogul socket?

Yes!!!  A mogul socket adapter Model #ED646MOG may be available in the electrical department of a hardware store. This adapter will reduce the mogul socket to a regular size socket. If the original socket is a three-way lamp, the mogul adapter will change the lamp to an on-off lamp.

Which wattage of Total Spectrum bulb should you choose to replace your current incandescent bulb?

The replacement suggestions listed in the quick bulb replacement guide are based on experience and customer input.  Due to the "white light" quality and better see-abilty of Total Spectrum light, less wattage is needed.  The suggestions are not based on direct lumen comparison.
